Manila

Manila's lodging is modest in scale — a handful of motels, cabins, and RV parks serving visitors headed to the reservoir. Booking ahead matters during peak summer boating season, since the total inventory is small relative to demand.

Manila's dining options are limited but practical: a small number of diners, a grocery store, and fuel stops along the main highway through town. Most visitors treat it as a supply stop before heading to Lucerne Valley Marina or camping at the reservoir, rather than a dining destination in its own right.

Manila sits at 6,368 feet on the west side of Flaming Gorge Reservoir, serving as both the seat of Daggett County — Utah's least populous county — and the headquarters for Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. With a population of roughly 318, it's a small town by any measure, but it punches well above its weight as a supply point for visitors heading to the reservoir's marinas and trailheads.

The town was founded in 1898 and incorporated in 1936, decades before Flaming Gorge Dam or the reservoir existed. Its name is often attributed to news of the Spanish-American War's Battle of Manila Bay reaching the valley around the time of settlement. For most of its history, Manila's economy centered on ranching in the high desert basin; the completion of Flaming Gorge Dam in 1964 and the recreation area's creation in 1968 gradually shifted the town toward tourism, though ranching remains part of the local identity.

Today Manila functions as the practical base for visitors exploring the Utah side of Flaming Gorge — closer to Lucerne Valley Marina than any other town, and the natural stop for fuel, groceries, and lodging before heading to the water.

Flaming Gorge has no shuttle system on either side of the state line. From Manila, Lucerne Valley Marina is about 7 miles east, Buckboard Marina is roughly 22 miles north toward the Wyoming border, and Flaming Gorge Dam and Cedar Springs Marina are about 25 miles away via UT-44. All access is by personal vehicle.
